The main venue types in London
Townhouse and members' club venues
Mayfair, Marylebone and South Kensington concentrate a cluster of Georgian townhouses and private members' clubs that operate as wedding venues. These tend to seat 60–150 for dinner, have period interiors that require minimal decoration, and charge accordingly: hire fees typically run £4,000–£15,000 depending on the season and layout. The appeal is intimacy and a certain kind of elegance that doesn't require a marquee.
Historic buildings
London has an extraordinary concentration of historic spaces available for private hire: livery company halls in the City, Victorian civic buildings in the inner boroughs, Baroque churches that license civil ceremonies alongside religious ones. Hire costs vary enormously — some City halls run into five figures for a Saturday; others are surprisingly accessible off-peak.
Converted industrial spaces
South and East London — Bermondsey, Hackney, Shoreditch, Peckham — have a dense stock of converted warehouses, railway arches, printworks and factories. These are typically dry-hire, which means you bring your own caterer, lighting and furniture. Budget accordingly: the hire fee may look affordable at £3,000–£6,000, but fitting out the space properly adds significant cost.
Hotels and private dining rooms
Every major London hotel has a wedding package. The advantage is the all-inclusive nature — accommodation, catering and service are bundled. The disadvantage is that you're one of dozens of weddings that year in the same room with the same menu. If exclusivity and personalisation matter, look elsewhere. If logistics and certainty matter more, a well-run hotel wedding is hard to beat.
Outdoor and garden venues
London is surprisingly green. A handful of venues have genuine gardens: conservatories with kitchen gardens, Regency orangeries, terraces overlooking the Thames. These are booked fastest and command the highest premiums — expect to move early for any date in May to September.

Practical considerations
Transport. Any venue that requires taxis for guests to leave adds complexity and expense. Tube access or proximity to a mainline station matters more than you might expect at midnight.
Noise restrictions. Many central London venues have strict noise curfews — 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. for amplified music. If a late-night party is important, confirm the policy in writing.
Exclusivity. London venues often host multiple events on the same day. If you need sole use of the building — for guest arrivals, ceremony, reception and dinner — ask explicitly whether that's available and what it costs.
Catering. Many London venues have preferred caterers or exclusive catering contracts. This removes flexibility but can simplify planning. If a specific caterer matters to you, confirm they're approved before signing.
When to book
The most popular London venues for Saturday dates in June, July and September receive enquiries 18–24 months in advance. If your date is flexible, early spring (April, May) and early autumn (September, October) offer better availability than the mid-summer peak. Fridays are increasingly popular and often priced at 70–80% of the Saturday rate.
