Berkshire has the royal credentials that other counties borrow. Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, rises above the Thames beside Eton College; Ascot Racecourse, founded by Queen Anne in 1711, hosts Royal Ascot every June; and Windsor Great Park, with the Savill Garden, runs south from the castle. Along the river, Bray, Cookham and Maidenhead hold the Thames-side houses and riverside hotels. Further west the Berkshire Downs open into racehorse country around Lambourn and Newbury.
The practical advantage is access. Reading is about half an hour from Paddington, and Heathrow sits beside the county's eastern edge, which suits couples with guests flying in. Country-house hotels with parkland and walled gardens carry most of the ceremonies, and the river gives a second option for a wedding by water. June to September is the busy season.
