Essex begins where east London ends and carries on until the land dissolves into salt marsh. The coast is all estuary: the Blackwater and the Colne, oyster beds around Mersea Island and Colchester, the salt works at Maldon, and mudflats that turn silver at low tide. Inland, the older buildings are better than the county's reputation, among them the Norman keep at Castle Hedingham, the Tudor gatehouse of Layer Marney Tower and the Jacobean bulk of Audley End near Saffron Walden. The north-east corner runs into Constable's Dedham Vale.
The appeal for a wedding is distance without effort. Chelmsford is about half an hour from Liverpool Street and Colchester about fifty minutes, yet the barns, manor houses and estuary-side halls sit in open farmland with room for a marquee. Late spring and early autumn give the best light over the water. Colchester, Chelmsford and Saffron Walden are the practical bases for guests.
