Helsinki sits on a rocky peninsula with the Baltic Sea surrounding it on three sides, and the light in summer is so golden and endless that the city seems to glow from within. The architecture is a careful blend of Scandinavian minimalism and Russian-influenced grandeur (from when it was an autonomous Grand Duchy). The design scene is world-class.
Weddings happen May through August, with June ideal (the light barely sets at all). The saunas are a cultural non-negotiable. The restaurants are excellent and seasonal. The nearby islands offer boat-arrival possibilities. The local design scene means venues are architecturally interesting. The weather is unpredictable but the light is legendary. The nightlife is serious. Book early; everyone wants Helsinki in June when the light is permanent.
