The destination

Hertfordshire has been London's country retreat since the Romans built Verulamium on the site of what is now St Albans. The cathedral there is built partly from Roman brick, Hatfield House is a Jacobean mansion completed in 1611 with formal gardens to match, and Knebworth House is a Tudor manor remodelled in Gothic Revival style. Letchworth, founded in 1903, was the first garden city. Between the towns the county is chalk farmland and beech woods on the edge of the Chilterns.

For a wedding that means country-house settings a short train ride from the capital: St Albans has direct trains to St Pancras and Stevenage to King's Cross, both well under an hour. Hertford, Hitchin and Berkhamsted give guests market-town hotels and pubs within reach of the venues. Late May and September suit the gardens best, and the lawns and walled gardens of the big houses carry most of the ceremonies.
