Lausanne
Pick a venue first. Photographers, planners, florists slot around it. We do the shortlisting for you.
Lausanne tumbles down to the lake on a series of unexpected staircases and narrow streets so steep that cables pull trams uphill at 45-degree angles. This is a city for people who like walking as a form of meditation. The Olympic Museum sits above the water. The light at 6 p.m. in June is so golden that the Baroque cathedral turns almost peachy.
Weddings here split between the lakeside (terraced gardens, boat arrivals) and the old town (stone courtyards, low ceilings, candles). The city is wealthy in the way that makes restaurants flawless and hotels impeccable. Summer is warm and dry, though July can get crowded with other people's Instagram photos. Book September and you get the same light with fewer tourists. The local wine is called Lavaux—it grows on impossible slopes above the lake and tastes like minerals and intention.
