Sussex is two counties on one chalk spine. The South Downs run from Chichester in the west to the Seven Sisters cliffs and Beachy Head in the east, and the national park that covers them is open, walkable country close to the south coast. West Sussex has Arundel Castle, Chichester Cathedral and the Goodwood estate; East Sussex has Lewes, Rye, Bodiam Castle and Herstmonceux. In between are flint-and-brick villages, a long shingle and sand coast, and south-facing vineyards: Nyetimber and Ridgeview both make English sparkling wine here.

Late spring and September give the best conditions for outdoor ceremonies, and the Downs make a dramatic backdrop for photographs.
