Bruges

Step off the train into a medieval town so perfectly preserved that every corner looks photoshopped. The Belfry bells ring across the canals at five to every hour, and if you're standing in a garden behind a 15th-century townhouse when they chime, you'll understand why couples come here in June when the peonies are heavy with rain.
Breugel painted scenes from these streets 450 years ago and almost nothing has changed. Couples rent private palaces for receptions, toast under 400-year-old timber beams, and hire boats for midnight floats under swans. September is drier than June but just as beautiful. The city's only concession to modernity is that everyone speaks English and they've figured out how to feed two hundred guests without breaking a 14th-century floorboard.
