The Loire Valley is where French royalty decided to hang out centuries ago, with the result being dozens of châteaux scattered across a landscape of forests and farmland and rivers that meander like they're not particularly interested in getting anywhere. This is the landscape people have in mind when they think of 'romantic France'—and remarkably, the reality matches the fantasy.
Weddings favour May, June, September, and October. The châteaux can host ceremonies and receptions. The gardens are staged for a reason. The restaurants are excellent and seasonal. The wine (both white and red) is outstanding and inexpensive compared to other French regions. The light in late May lasts until 10 p.m. The landscape is relentlessly photogenic. Book early; every château is booked by other people with the same idea.
