Somerset is the county of orchards, moors and hills that rise out of nowhere. Glastonbury Tor stands over the flat Levels like an exclamation mark, Wells holds a cathedral with famous scissor arches and the title of England's smallest city, Cheddar Gorge cuts through the Mendips, and the Quantock Hills, England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, run down to a coast that meets Exmoor near Minehead. Cider is the county's drink, and the villages of the south are built in honey-coloured Ham stone.
Weddings here tend to be rural and unhurried: manor houses and farms in orchard country, tithe barns, and wide coastal settings along the Bristol Channel. Bath and Bristol have their own pages on this site and are the usual bases for guests arriving by rail, while Taunton and Wells serve the county itself. May to September is the season, with cider-apple blossom in spring.
